The hypothesis that phenotypic plasticity is an adaptation to environmental variation rests on the two assumptions that plasticity improves the performance of individuals that possess it, and that it evolved in response to selection imposed in heterogeneous environments. The first assumption has been upheld by studies showing the beneficial nature of plasticity. The second assumption is difficult to test since it requires knowing about selection acting in the past. However, it can be tested in its general form by asking whether natural selection currently acts to maintain phenotypic plasticity. We adopted this approach in a study of plastic morphological traits in larvae of the wood frog, Rana sybatica. First we reared tadpoles in artificial ponds for 18 days, in either the presence or absence of Anax dragonfly larvae (confined within cages to prevent them from killing the tadpoles). These conditioning treatments produced dramatic differences in size and shape: tadpoles from ponds with predators were smaller and had relatively short bodies and deep tail fins. We estimated selection by Anax on the two kinds of tadpoles by testing for non-random mortality in overnight predation trials. Dragonflies imposed strong selection by preferentially killing individuals with relatively shallow and short tail fins, and narrow tail muscles. The same traits that exhibited the strongest plasticity were under the strongest selection, except that tail muscle width exhibited no plasticity but experienced strong increasing selection. A laboratory competition experiment, testing for selection in the absence of predators, showed that tadpoles with deep tail fins grew relatively slowly. In the cattle tanks, where there were also no free predators, the predator-induced phenotype survived more poorly and developed slowly, but this cost was apparently not associated with particular morphological traits. These results indicate that selection is currently promoting morphological plasticity in R. sylvatica, and support the hypothesis that plasticity represents an adaptation to variable predator environments. 相似文献

Among 400 Drosophila melanogaster flies individually analysed for nine gene–enzyme systems, a total of 160 different genotypes were found: 78 were repeatedly observed in two to 22 individuals, and 82 appeared only once. An increase in the frequency of rare alleles could be observed in such groups of genotypes that were less frequent. Among 24 most frequent genotypes (in 189 individuals) only four different combinations of five third-chromosomal genes are present, and 12 different combinations of three second-chromosomal genes. Among 82 unique genotypes these combinations were much more versatile: 29 at the third, 22 at the second, and three at the first chromosomes. The proportion of heterozygotes was increasing from most frequent toward unique genotypes (1.5–2.1 ± 0.1), primarily due to heterozygosity in five third-chromosomal loci (0.4–1.1 ± 0.06). When the number of genotypes in 100, 200, 300 and 400 sampled flies was extrapolated to larger samples, it became clear that this increase has an asymptotic character. It must be assumed that for our nine-loci model a total of approximately 200–220 different genotypes may exist in a population of a few thousands individuals, which means that adaptive variation for such a complex gene–enzyme system must be very much limited. 相似文献

In dipterans, the wing-beat frequency, and, hence, the lift generated, increases linearly with ambient temperature. If flight performance is an important target of natural selection, higher wing:thorax size ratio and wing-aspect ratio should be favored at low temperatures because they increase the lift for a given body weight. We investigated this hypothesis by examining wing: thorax size ratio and wing-aspect ratio in Drosophila melanogaster collected from wild populations along a latitudinal gradient and in their descendants reared under standard laboratory conditions. In a subset of lines, we also studied the phenotypic plasticity of these traits in response to temperature. To examine whether the latitudinal trends in wing:thorax size ratio and wing-aspect ratio could have resulted from a correlated response to latitudinal selection on wing area, we investigated the correlated responses of these characters in lines artificially selected for wing area. In both the geographic and the artificially selected lines, wing:thorax size ratio and wing-aspect ratio decreased in response to increasing temperature during development. Phenotypic plasticity for either trait did not vary among latitudinal lines or selective regimes. Wing:thorax size ratio and wing-aspect ratio increased significantly with latitude in field-collected flies. The cline in wing:thorax size ratio had a genetic component, but the cline in wing-aspect ratio did not. Artificial selection for increased wing area led to a statistically insignificant correlated increase in wing:thorax size ratio and a decrease in wing-aspect ratio. Our observations are consistent with the hypotheses that high wing-thorax size ratio and wing aspect ratio are per se selectively advantageous at low temperatures. 相似文献

In participatory plant breeding, farmers are involved in simple selection schemes that are not suitable for assessing genetic variability in the segregating populations. We propose to use information derived from molecular marker analyses to help monitoring such populations. In this study, we used three indicators to compare genetic variability in eight genetic structures, that is three plant populations selected by farmers over five generations, three nonselected populations and two commercial varieties. The three indicators were the polymorphic locus rate, heterozygosity rate and dissimilarity index. The results highlighted that the genetic variability decreased more with farmers’ selection than with environmental factors. The breeding process was not complete because genetic variability in the selected populations was midway between that of the nonselected populations and that of the commercial varieties monitored. The three proposed indicators were relevant for describing the studied populations. They could be interpreted according to a grid drawn up on the basis of the results of the present study. 相似文献

The hypothesis that sexual selection promotes speciation has rarely been tested. We identified 70 evolutionarily independent events of feather ornaments in birds. For each focal species we noted the number of ornamented and nonornamented species belonging to its genus and its number of subspecies, as well as its mating system and the extent of its geographic range. For purposes of comparison, we randomly chose a second, nonornamented species for which we obtained information on the number of subspecies, and in cases in which the nonornamented species was in the same genus, we chose a third, nonornamented species in a related genus and obtained the same information. We then noted the number of species in each genus and the difference in numbers of species, or species richness, between paired genera. For the genera of the focal ornamented species, we regressed number of ornamented species on number of nonornamented species and found a positive relationship. As number of species per genus rose, number of ornamented species per genus rose more rapidly, indicating that more speciose genera have a higher proportion of ornamented species than less speciose genera. We then took the deviations from this regression, the residual number of species, and regressed them on the differences in species richness between the paired genera. This relationship was positive indicating that ornamented genera with more than the expected number of ornamented species were more speciose with respect to their paired genera than were genera with fewer than the expected number of ornamented species. Finally, we compared the deviations from this regression, the residual number of ornamented species, with species' mating system and found a greater residual number of ornamented species among species whose mating system is associated with greater skew in male mating success and thus more intense sexual selection. Ornamented species had more subspecies than nonornamented species, even when controlling for geographic range, suggesting an association between subspeciation and ornaments. 相似文献

Cells of Tetrahymena pyriformis syngen 1 grown at 30 C after conjugation achieve sexual maturity more quickly than do cells grown at 19 C, whether time is measured in numbers of cell divisions or in terms of absolute time. This result is achieved regardless of the temperature at which conjugation and nuclear reorganization occur. These observations differ from those of other workers investigating Paramecium, and suggest that the long term “chronometer” is more tightly coupled to cell division in Paramecium multimicronucleatum and Paramecium caudatum than in Tetrahymena pyriformis. 相似文献

Although the sexual behavior of female rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) has been reported to decrease during pregnancy, systematic studies have been largely confined to reports of male behavior. Therefore, we designed a study to examine changes in female sexual behavior during pregnancy. Six cycling multiparous female rhesus macaques were paired during the periovulatory period of the menstrual cycle and during the first and second halves of pregnancy with six sexually experienced males of the same species. Each female was paired with the same male in all tests. The means of the behavioral measures scored on days 11–13 of the menstrual cycle, 35–56 of pregnancy, and 147–168 of pregnancy were compared. Females showed a significant decrease in the present contact ratio and the rate of threat-aways during pregnancy. Males showed lower rates of threatening-away, contacting, mounting, intromitting, and ejaculating when females were pregnant. The extent to which the decrease in male sexual behavior can be accounted for by an increase in female rejection is uncertain, but it is probably as significant as any loss of attractiveness that might accompany pregnancy. 相似文献

Although many studies examine the form of sexual selection in males, studies characterizing this selection in females remain sparse. Sexual selection on females is predicted for sex‐role‐reversed Mormon crickets, Anabrus simplex, where males are choosy of mates and nutrient‐deprived females compete for matings and nutritious nuptial gifts. We used selection analyses to describe the strength and form of sexual selection on female morphology. There was no positive linear sexual selection on the female body size traits predicted to be associated with male preferences and female competition. Instead, we detected selection for decreasing head width and mandible length, with stabilizing selection as the dominant form of nonlinear selection. Additionally, we tested the validity of a commonly used instantaneous measure of mating success by comparing selection results with those determined using cumulative mating rate. The rewardless orchid Dactylorhiza sambucina shows a stable flower colour polymorphism, with both yellow- and red-flowered morphs growing sympatrically. Pollination biology and breeding system were investigated to examine the effects of density of plants, colour polymorphism, inflorescence dimension, and flower position within inflorescence on male and female reproductive success in three natural populations of D. sambucina. There were significant differences among sites in the number of pollinia removed and in fruit set per inflorescence. Number of removed pollinia and capsule production in D. sambucina were independent from flower and inflorescence size or flower position. As a whole, the red morphs showed the highest number of capsules produced, while the yellow morphs had the greatest male success. The relative male and female reproductive success were independent from plant density but were significantly correlated with the yellow morph frequency at the population level. Overall, our findings show that the contribution to the total reproductive success deriving from the two colour morphs does not conform with the predictions of negative frequency-dependent selection. 相似文献
